Notes for JONATHAN BARBER** (8) SAWYER:
According to the 1900 Federal Census, Jonathan "Barbe" and Eliza were married 50 years and Eliza had given birth to 7 children.
Jonathan Barber was called "Barbe" in Michigan.
Jonathan's mother, Polly, and a sister (name unknown), died in the early 1830's. It is believed that his middle name "Barber" was his mother's maiden name and the information on the Barber family is believed to be his mother's family line. There is no way of proving it but Jonathan's parents were married in Washington County, NY and lived in the same township that West Barber lived in. West Barber moved to Mina, Chautauqua County, NY by 1825 and Rodney and Polly Sawyer sold their land in December of 1825 and were residing in Chautauqua Co., NY in 1830. Hiram was born in 1832 and Polly had a brother named Hiram. Sometime after this, Polly and the young daughter died. There are no cemetery records showing their death in Mina Township. They may possibly have moved into Erie County by this time. In 1836 after Polly's death, Rodney married Jane Paxton in Erie County, NY and they had four children.
Hiram Sawyer was in the Civil War and was wounded and discharged early. Rodney died in 1864 and his sons, Jonathan and Hiram, and their half-brother, Levi moved to Michigan. It would seem that at least two of the three sisters stayed in New York.
